Trusting God in Uncertainty: Matthew 6
Two Rivers Church · 1:25:07
This sermon, part of the "Flipped: Turning the World Right Side Up" series on Jesus's Sermon on the Mount, addresses uncertainty and the fragility of trust. The speaker references Paul's words to the church in Philippi: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." He shares a personal experience of uncertainty during a trip to Israel, where he learned to relax and trust that details were being handled, much like Jesus's teaching. The speaker emphasizes that living the way of God's Kingdom shapes trust and steadies us in uncertainty. He connects this to Matthew Chapter 5, where Jesus states, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." Jesus's teaching on righteousness, exceeding that of the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 5:20), is presented not as a status but as a call to action and right relationships. He also highlights Matthew Chapter 6, verse 1, "Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them," clarifying that motive is key in spiritual practices like giving, prayer, and fasting. The sermon then focuses on Jesus's instruction not to worry about life, food, drink, or clothing, as seen in the illustration of the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. Jesus asks, "Which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?" and states, "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." The speaker encourages listeners to ask themselves where their heart is unsteady and what it would look like to trust Jesus with it.
