Freedom Through the Passover Lamb

Two Rivers Church · 1:25:01

This message continues the "Easter Egg" series, exploring how Jesus's story is woven throughout scripture. The focus is on Jesus's death and resurrection setting people free from sin and the fear of death, enabling them to live the full life God intended. John 8:36 is cited: "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." The speaker emphasizes that while we await Christ's return, we can experience God's goodness and the kingdom of God now. The teaching examines the Passover in Exodus 12, specifically verses 21-27, describing the instructions for the Passover lamb and the blood on the doorposts. This event is presented as a foreshadowing of Jesus's sacrificial death, where a lamb died as a substitute. The speaker contrasts American freedom, often defined as personal autonomy, with biblical freedom, which is freedom to live as God intended, characterized by dependence on God. References include 2 Corinthians 3, Galatians 5:1, and Romans 6:14 to illustrate freedom from sin and the law, and freedom to live in relationship with God. Jesus is identified as the complete Passover lamb, fulfilling the theme of waiting for a sacrificial lamb seen in Genesis 22 with Abraham and Isaac, and declared by John the Baptist as "the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." 1 Corinthians 5 is referenced, where Paul states, "Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed." The sermon outlines three aspects of this freedom: freedom from the bondage of sin, freedom from the punishment of death, and freedom to live the life made to live with Jesus. Romans 6:6-7 is quoted: "We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin." Jesus's words to Martha in John 11 are cited: "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die." Three implications for living out this freedom are presented: gospel-centered generosity, gospel-centered forgiveness (citing Ephesians 4:32), and gospel-centered service (citing Galatians 5:13). The speaker shares about the "Love Gives" initiative supporting ministries for disabled children in the Democratic Republic of Congo and a Christian school in Kinshasa. The message concludes with a call to remember Jesus's generosity, forgiveness, and service, and to live out freedom in Him, followed by communion.
